GameStop Expecting a Worldwide PS4 Launch

Sony’s jumped the gun, or delivered the first fatal blow in this massively awaited and anticipated console war. While Microsoft still remains taciturn and overly conservative as far as their next-generation console details are concerned, Sony continues to flow succulent information. However, of all of those details, Sony has kept one key aspect under heavy security; and that is the official release date and regions. While Sony said to expect it this Holiday Season, that didn’t give gamers a precise idea. The Holiday Season is subjective, but is mainly starting around October.
Now GameStop’s executive VP of strategy business and brand development, Michael Hogan, has decided to add to the buzz. “We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft’s final plans are,” said Hogan. “We have scenarios with one console introduction, as well as with two. Even a single launch in 2013 will drive double-digit console growth in 2014; and two launches would likely drive the console category north of 20% growth.” GameStop has high hopes. What’s more intriguing is Hogans use of the word “globally.” It’s expected that the PS4 will launch this year in Japan, but there aren’t any GameStop’s in Japan! – This is where some sort of catchy and “gotcha” type of music would play…
Since Hogan is expecting a global PS4 launch, it’s a safe assumption to note that many regions that GameStop operates in will reap the benefits as well. More specifically, there are 6,700 GameStop retailers spread across the U.S, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
On a similar note, GameStop is ready and doubting Sony’s ability to meet the demands they are expecting. GameStop has done a recent survey on customers, which revealed staggering numbers. 34% of the customers are expecting to get a PS4 within the next year. The President of GameStop noted, “Although we have been given no official numbers by Sony, we do believe that demand will far outpace the supply of this product during the launch window.”
